Leaving Broome, we took the direction of Derby, city at the beginning of the Gibbs River road.
We stopped at the Boab prison tree. The boab tree have the particularity to have a hollow trunk. In the 1890th, they used some of them as lockup for indigenous prisoner on their way to Derby. Easier than carrying heavy chains and ropes to keep them from escaping.
Next to the tree, there is the Australian longest cattle water trough. It used to be the longest one in the world until a guy from Texas went by and decided to built one two feet longer when he went back home. Crazy American...
Derby used to have a big slaughterhouse where they would butcher the cattle from the area. With the harbor near by it was a good location for that kind of business. When the farmer would bring the cattle in, the cows would be thirsty from the long trip and as soon as they see water, they would start running toward it. It could get messy if they weren't enough room for all of them to drink at the same time. That's the reason they built this really long trough.
