To Coober Pedy

16.04

Today is going to be a long driving day.

We got up early and made a quick groceries shopping stop to Port Augusta before heading north on Stuart Highway, starting our journey in the outback toward the Red Center.

Not much to say about the drive, the outback become really boring after a few hours...

We just had a little adventure along the way. You might think that since there is not much traffic on this road there isn't a big risk of being stopped by a cop for speeding, you are wrong. And someone in the car learn the hard way that speeding in Australia is not cheap. for 16km/h over the speed limit, it's going to cost you 409AUD, not fun. And if you are wondering, no it wasn't me ;)

So after 6hours and 336miles, we arrived at our overnight stop, the small mining town of Coober Pedy. It's the world number one place for Opal.

There is not much going on there, but it's an interesting place to stop and spend a few hours. They mostly live in underground houses, good way to stay cool during the really warm summer month. We walk around town, stopped at a few opal stores, some of them underground, visited an underground church and divers galleries. I like the place, it give you the feeling you arrived in a new country, so different from everything I've seen so far in Australia.
We stayed at a paying campground, not finding a free one around there. When we arrived, the owner started to explain than it didn't wanted to make people pay, but at the same time it's his business, and he had to raise a bit his prices, so it cost us 10AUS for one night, and not per person, for all of us... And the crazy part is that we even had free wifi there, in the one place you would never expect it!!
